![]() Reagan saw foreign policy in black and white, us against the “commies.” He backed “freedom fighters” (mostly thugs) against dictatorships he disliked, and backed dictatorships he did like. After a 60 percent re-election in 1982, an emboldened Sasser became an outspoken critic of President Ronald Reagan’s policy of supporting the Contra rebellion against Nicaragua’s Marxist Sandinista government. Sasser was cautious in his first term, concentrating on parochial Tennessee issues. ![]()
